Epic Road Trip Adventures – Day 1

Mike Seliske and I have been road tripping in SoCal, Nevada, and Arizona (ok, fine, Las Vegas and the Hoover Dam for those last two) since Sunday morning. Mike's already put together a blog post of our first day out on the road, so you can head on over to his blog to read it.

College Football Game & Fleet Week

I've been pretty busy at work the last few weeks, so I haven't found the chance to edit some video I've taken the last few weekends until now. Two weekends ago, I ended up at the Stanford vs. UCLA college football game in Palo Alto at Stanford Stadium. It was my first time at a college football game, so that was definitely a unique experience.

Last weekend, I ended up going sailing, or rather, ended up boating around the Bay for the air show during Fleet Week. It was pretty awesome.

I've put together a little video showing both of these events, so enjoy!

San Francisco Does Not Suck!

This past weekend, a friend of mine from UW, Michael, joined my roommate, Bhavya, and I in San Francisco.  Saturday, we took a bus ride and a hike up to Twin Peaks and then ended up going to Coit Tower, both times to take in the sights.  We ended our day with dinner in North Beach at a restaurant called Volare that I had been to last fall with a bunch of people when I was in the Bay Area, picked up some hipster attire at a store nearby, and had some pastries from an Italian bakery.

Ike's Place sandwiches were the meal of the day on Sunday (delicious!), devoured while hanging around in Mission Dolores Park.  Following that, we made our way to a thrift shop and then to Mission Minis for some cupcakes!

Pictures of our adventure and my conversion to a hipster are after the break; even a video!

Questioning #uWaterloo’s #Bikinigate Decision

With this term slowly coming to an end, I've found some time to actually write a blog post for the first time in four months (yay!).  Unfortunately, it's not under the best of circumstances and you'll soon find out why.  I find it is best to voice my opinion here, as well as what I've heard from others, rather than through a slew of 140-character tweets.

If you've been living under a rock (or under books if you've been studying for exams) for the past week, or two, or even three weeks, then you've probably missed out on what may be the most absurd decision the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo has made this term.  To sum it up, the Formula SAE (FSAE) team was suspended until June 1st after the administration discovered photos of one of the team's female members posing in front of the team's car in a bikini.  The photos were meant to be part of the female member's application for a charity calendar to raise money for breast cancer research; to the best of my understanding, these photos were not going to be included in the calendar itself.

I'm going to try my best not to repeat what Erin has already brought up, but there may be some overlap (note: read Erin's blog post if you haven't already).  In this post, I'm going to question the arguments the University has been using to support their decision, as well as voice my disappointment towards the University for how the administration has handled this whole situation and blown it completely out of proportion.

Why You Should Gamble In Las Vegas (UPDATED!)

Eventually, you'll win enough money to cover a good portion of your expenses while you're there. Take my trip there as an example (less than a month ago):

Why You Should Gamble In Las Vegas

Why You Should Gamble In Las Vegas

The red line represents the total expenses I would have incurred at every point during my trip excluding anything I lost or won while gambling.  The blue line includes anything lost or won while gambling.

Obviously, gambling should be done within reason.  I set a separate gambling budget for myself while I was there and eventually won everything I had lost back and a bit more as you can see in the graph above.

Enough said. :)

UPDATE: Yes, the Casino always has the house advantage, so make sure you go in there with some luck. In my case, "Black 11" in Roulette was my lucky number and it came up three times at the same table I was at. :P

Two busy, but fun two weeks (and TWiT!)

I've been less involved with my own personal projects and Unbounds work these past few weeks since they've been pretty eventful with other stuff.

Two weekends ago, I was in LA with my roommate Craig, my work colleague Mitchell, and his buddy Mike.  Basically spent the weekend doing the usual touristy stuff.  We visited LA, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and Santa Monica.  We did a lot of stuff in such a small amount of time, but it was definitely a lot of fun and totally worth it.

The week after this, I received some Tropo swag for my last blog post - thanks guys!

Last weekend, my parents were in town.  They did the touristy stuff on their own for a few days while I worked.  We drove around the Bay together, took some great shots, and even went up and then down Lombard Street (which was both terrifying and a lot of fun at the same time).

This weekend, in particular, was pretty busy.  Friday night, I was lucky enough to get a ticket to watch Harry Potter 7: Part 1.  It was an awesome movie and I can't wait for Part 2!  Yesterday, I took a drive down to the Gilroy Premium Outlets for some shopping and then met up with my buddy Adam and his roommate Tarek for an awesome Korean BBQ dinner at Ohgane (highly recommended!).  Today, I was an audience member on episode 275 of TWiT.  Joey Robert and I booked seats for this show back in September not knowing who would be on, so we were pretty excited when we found out Kevin Rose was going to be a guest on the show.  Leo Laporte and the gang were awesome, and his staff were very hospitable.  I thought it was pretty cool to be introduced on the show and then take pictures with both Leo and Kevin.  Thanks guys for an amazing time!

I'll probably be coding a bit more this week and next, up until my trip to Las Vegas, so I'll probably come up with something a bit more interesting to blog about by then.  In any case, check out some pictures of these past two weeks after the break!
